Hits in the headlines #68

After a short, unexpected break, I finally have a post for you to practise your reading skills again! Sorry for the delay, but it should be back to the weekly schedule for now.

First, a story in recent months about the safety of flights, following the Boeing scandal. Is flying actually getting more dangerous? How worried should we be about taking flights? Why is aeroplane safety such a big concern in the news?

Next, a story from London of a school that hopes to ease student anxiety and improve communication. How do they hope to achieve this? 11-hour school-days. What does the plan actually hope to change? Who would want to take part? Could this actually be the future of schooling in the UK?

The extra article here is a blog post about the changes to Google search that will completely shift your experience when using the search engine. The so-called “death of Google search” is a hot topic online right now, with many people seeing website traffic plummet amongst the new search changes. What are the actual changes? What does this mean for you? And, could this be the step too far for Google, finally pushing people to other search engines? It may be a case of Google being too big to fail, but it is an interesting read nonetheless. Additionally, the same information is available in audio format on the same page.

Finally, our video this week is an environment focused video looking at how much of an impact we can really have in stopping climate change and potentially changing the course of the future. As many companies offer some kind of green initiative, such as tree planting, we look at the real impact that it can have. The purpose is to educate about the impact of these climate activities, but it serves as inspiration to do more, rather than just inform.

Here are some interesting stories that I have found this week. With different topics, I am sure you will find something that is new and challenging for you. Why not use this as a chance to learn some new language?

Try to note some new language that you see or hear in the articles or video and bring it to the class.
