Although many people are worried about the amount of time they spend on their phones or computers, we live in an age that, in many cases, needs these things to communicate, complete work, and access media. While there is, of course, an alternative, it can be hard to limit our access at times. This is where the “Offline Club” comes in. In the Netherlands, a social space for those who want to disconnect has appeared a huge success, offering board games and books instead of phones and laptops. The concept drew attention online, and rather ironically, used social media to spread the word. Some people see it as a digital detox, or a counter movement against social media that is ever vying for our attention, but whatever the motivation it is undoubtedly a good thing. Sticking with the theme of places to eat and drink, the second article looks at the impact of design in the restaurants and cafés that we visit, and how the typeface could have a bigger impact on your experience than you think. Sometimes, we just like the way a place looks and it is hard to explain why. Perhaps, we connect with the branding. Maybe the interior design makes us feel comfortable. Whatever the reason for liking these places, the design elements are really important. In this article, there is a look at the situation seen in many places across the UK, where gentrification and the closure of independent stores has seen big-budget chains replace the spots on our high streets. The “design legacy” of independent stores is what often gives us a special connection to a place, but how exactly does this happen? And, what is changing in the UK?
